Ruth Roman (n e Gold) was born in Lynn in Massachusetts. She was the daughter of Lithuanian Jews Mary Pauline and Abraham Roman. Her father, who was a carnival barker, was killed when she was a small little girl. This forced her mother to support the family by being a waitress and cleaning woman. Ruth lived in a slum Boston tenement community in Massachusetts. She attended school there. She left the institution she was in after only two years to pursue acting as a profession. It was a difficult path to pursue. Even though she got an opportunity as a hat check girl in New York posing as a woman for a magazine however, there were no theatre opportunities that was offered. As a hat check girl at a nightclub she quit her job and moved back to Boston. She worked as an usherette during the day and then was a part of the New England Repertory Company by night, which was her first permanent acting gig. She completed her studies at Bishop-Lee Theatre School, where she specialized in drama.
